Mang:

I agree, and I think this "second" generation of combo devices will help sharpen the focus of manufacturers so that the next generation will be another evolutionary step forwards as they learn what people really want and will use. I think the most likely evolution will be to a smaller form factor and weight while keeping at least the M10x size screen (in color). Look how far cell phones have come in the last few years. As PDA's go more wireless and cell phones add more functionality, the lines between the two become more blurred. I'm reminded of the Barron's article from last March (just before the IPO) which predicted that Palm's and PDA's in general would remain a minor market compared to cell phones. They couldn't have been more wrong the way things are moving in the marketplace.

As for expansion platforms, I think that's a different kettle of fish. The SD expansion approach adopted by Palm has the advantage that it's an "open standard", endorsed industry wide:

sdcard.org./member.htm

IMO that gives it a leg up over the Handspring "Springboard" and Sony "Memory Stick" and other proprietary approaches, which may be successful in their respective company's offerings but not on a wider basis.

Palm doesn't care, since it makes no money off the SD slot technology itself, but will off the Palm device accessories that utilize the SD slot. Plus the Palm OS is "expansion device agnostic" and supports not only the SD expansion, but all the others as well.
