Art - but Maurice is a lot closer than we are to China. The Chinese have known for a long time how W feels. My guess is. as usual, they are posturing, probing for weakness, hoping to throw a fright into Americans - just as they did during the Clinton years with noticable success. But it's a game - albeit dangerous, but a long way from the Cuban missile crisis which was my scariest time. W is going to China in 7 months; they need the trade outlets for their people's ultimate well being; they let Taiwan businesses build substantially on the mainland and need their technology; a move on Taiwan would isolate them from all of Asia, not to mention the rest of us, and they would have a little more territory and people, cut off from the world (except the Russians and French and some rogue states) with little means to feed their people or improve their status and with increasing restlessness among their ethnic and regional peoples. How long would leadership (really the PLA) be able to resist a Tienamin Square type uprising based upon lack of food, foreign currencies and trade, and infinitely larger in scale. I have to believe that aging Chinese leadership thinks about this all the time. Taiwan ultimately buys catastrophe for them; they'll probably go part of the distance and let it fade away. Remember Quemoy and Matsu; I believe that was about 45 years ago. I'm certainly betting that Q is there to stay. John
