Situated on the North Shore of Lake Ontario, the climate is ideal to produce world class vintages. Domaine de la Dimethaid reclaimed this land in the early 1990’s from a bankrupt vintner. Since those early days, despite the odds stacked against it, Domaine de la Dimethaid has managed to very slowly and deliberately, develop the infrastructure necessary to produce some of the world’s premier vintages. The road was not easy. Over the years there have been many disappointing vintages, the result of fruit not harvested on schedule. Many local aficionados have been left in the dark when the promised vintages failed to make it to the tastings. For this reason, the perception has lingered that these vineyards were not capable of producing the prize fruit. In many cases, the reality was not the operational inefficiencies of Domaine de la Dimethaid, but rather, beyond-control external factors, namely climate and regulatory bodies. Things have changed. After years of cultivating the vines to maturity, the foundation seems in place to capture the world’s attention. 2001 will likely be the year of Domaine de la Dimethaid. Despite the any recognition by critics to date, look for a release this year which should capture a massive following from two very large American growers, whose products are increasingly growing less palatable to world consumers. As well, Domaine de la Dimethaid has been quietly working with a small European vintner to develop what will be an absolute showstopper. Early word on this remarkable blend has it combining the best of many of the world’s appellations, consequently appealing to numerous, diverse and discriminating palates. This should raise the ire of the world’s master vintners, but inevitably, they will likely embrace the unorthodox cuvee. In other areas of the vineyard, a hybrid of the current varietal is being planted. These vines should mature and be ready produce fruit in 3-4 years – this will ensure the long-term development of Domaine de la Dimethaid. Tasting Notes (Chateuneuf-du-Rebecca) Nose – Reserved and standoffish at first. The power of this vintage is not revealed at first and comes off rather coy. Slight and subtle hints of ripe fruit are discernable, but an acutely educated nose is demanded. However, for those so inclined, the incredible promise of this vintage speaks loud through its complex bouquet. Palate -- Strong tannins give an overly mouth puckering jolt to all those but the most researched connoisseurs. For those who can get past this initial sensation, the vintage opens up beautifully to reveal the great complexity and strength. This vintage is massive, and brimming with ripe fruit. Sure to steal the taste buds of consumers away from the much hyped and over-rated American brands. Will only get better with age. Cellaring a few will pay handsome dividends to the patient connoisseur. Overall NotesAn unbelievable value at these prices. First release of the 2001 vintage will hit UK shelves next week. Look for this vintage to gain a strong footing in the rest of Europe, the cradle of many vintages of its ancestry. Word of mouth should see this vintage flying off of shelves, even if it should not attract the initial interest of “old school” critics, who will likely keep touting their over priced cru to the gullible.
