Thanks for your reply but I think you have slightly misunderstood my not so rhetorical question.

Blair does want to be in Euroland but does he realise that his Chancellor and rival is helping to delay the hour with his gold auctions because the £ would more likely fall to the level you mentioned without these shenanigans ?

The orthodox view here is that having been denied the leadership of his party Brown at least insists on ruling the Treasury like a personal fiefdom and anyway Blair is too busy being on stage. He glories in getting his own way with his Cabinet colleagues - similarly he does not want Europeans telling him what to do which is one cause of his Euro scepticism.

If I remember correctly Brown originally sold these auctions to the press (and I am suggesting even Blair himself ) as a chance to spread the portfolio and buy more Euros!. It was portrayed as being pro Euro but the "conspiracy" is that the benefit to the dollar is much greater than the supposed benefit to the Euro so is in fact anti Euro in the financial and political sense. If I am correct this would be a typical finesse from the man increasingly associated with "stealth" taxes. (I am also thinking that last year the BOE took a considerable part in that Euro support package but somewhat surprised everyone in almost straightaway selling their position taking a quick profit - this would fit the view that a stasis of dollar/euro/gold is what is being aimed for).

I remember the surpise occassioned by the realisation some time after the event that Mrs Thatcher had no idea what Chancellor Lawson was doing in the late eighties shadowing the Deutschmark which eventually created so many problems. Her ignorance was regarded as genuine despite most people (FT etc) knowing this was happening and the fact that Prime Minister and Chancellor are connected literally by a door (No 10 and No 11 Downing Street). Brown and Lawson are alike in their reputations at the time - though Lawsons has now sunk without trace- and their bullying arrogance.

PS In fact the Blairs go next door to sleep and vice versa !
Blair keeps on fathering children - Leo is the first baby born in Downing Street for 150 years - whilst Brown has only just got married. There is apparently more bedroom space in No 11 than No 10.
