QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies Announces Adoption of MSM3300/gpsOne Solution by SECOM for New Security Service in Japan

CoCo SECOM, New Security Service for People and Vehicles, Offers Advanced Geographic Position Detection Featuring Lightweight, Compact Service Terminal at Reasonable Rates

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 19, 2001-- QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM - news), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced that SECOM Co., Ltd., the leading provider of security services in Japan, will launch CoCo SECOM, a new safety service for locating the position of people and vehicles, with nationwide availability scheduled to begin in Japan on April 1, 2001. The new service represents the world's first commercial deployment of the QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies (QCT) MSM3300(TM) Mobile Station Modem (MSM(TM)) integrated circuit and system software solution incorporating gpsOne(TM) position location technology, and uses SECOM's extensive security service network in conjunction with geographic positioning to provide affordable personal and vehicle security. This new technology uses both Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites and KDDI's commercial CDMA cellular phone networks to provide position-based security for subscribers and communicates with the MSM3300-based personal security device. This is the first service capable of working indoors and in other areas where conventional GPS systems that rely totally on GPS satellite information do not work well or at all.

``gpsOne enables us to provide our customers with personal security services in environments where these services were previously unavailable,'' said Toshitaka Sugimachi, president of SECOM Co., Ltd. ``By using gpsOne's affordable, all-terrain position-location capability, we enhance our customers' ability to care for and protect their loved ones.''

``We are very pleased to work with SECOM to enable the world's first commercial gpsOne deployment to enhance individual personal safety,'' said Don Schrock, president of QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. ``This launching represents a new trend of using MSM products in non-handset-based wireless devices. We expect this trend to accelerate with the advent of wireless high-speed data and other advanced technologies that will fuel the development of a wide variety of devices for use in automotive, e-commerce and wireless computing markets.''

The CoCo SECOM service goes beyond conventional building-centered security by offering personal, vehicular and mobile property security services. CoCo SECOM locates the position of persons or vehicles needing assistance using a compact terminal developed exclusively for this service. Once located, SECOM informs the responsible subscriber of the person's or item's position, and, if necessary, SECOM dispatches emergency personnel to provide assistance. CoCo SECOM services are available 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

The gpsOne solution merges GPS satellite and network information, as well as highly sophisticated SnapTrack(TM) wireless location technology, to provide a high-availability solution that offers industry-leading accuracy and performance. Fully supported by SnapTrack's SnapSmart(TM) v3.0 location server software to provide service providers with a complete location solution, gpsOne position location technology provides the world's widest GPS accessibility, both indoors and outdoors, in urban canyons and rural settings, as well as the most cost-effective solution for wireless position location technology in mobile devices for CDMA cellular and Personal Communications Service (PCS) networks.

SECOM Co., Ltd. was founded in 1962 as the first Japanese private security enterprise. In 1966, SECOM developed the first online security system in Japan, and has continuously developed a variety of security systems, combined with computer systems, telecommunications networks and human resources. Today, SECOM is the largest security company in Japan, and provides safety services to a wide variety of facilities, including homes, stores, offices, financial institutions and large-scale shopping malls. SECOM will be deploying their security systems in 10 countries: Taiwan, Korea, United States, Thailand, Great Britain, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, China and Indonesia.
