focus groups can lead you in all kinds of directions.

A focus group is not a national poll. If slaves were included in the poll, then pro-slavery would have been a small minority position. Same with segregation and single sex voting. A poll is not a guarentee of good judgement either, but if done well it can point to a better solution to a problem than can the opinion of a small group of partisans. The reason most on this thread don't like polls is that they hold extreme minority positions and the polls expose their judgement.
