Jiro Technology Adoption Grows, Bringing Industry Closer to Truly Open Storage Networks StorageTek and QLogic Join Sun Microsystems and Other Industry Leaders Working Toward Ending the Complexity and Limitation of SANs PALO ALTO, Calif., March 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Sun Microsystems, Inc., (Nasdaq: SUNW - news) today announced that Storage Technology Corporation's Horizon Library Observer 1.0 and QLogic Corporation's SANbox switches have achieved Jiro(TM) Enabled Certification. StorageTek and QLogic join the ranks of companies including Sun, VERITAS Software, Crossroads Systems and BMC Software, that are leading the trend toward open storage integration with Jiro technology-enabled products.
Sun also announced today that it plans to make the new Jiro Technology 1.5 release available on March 30. Based on the Java(TM) 2 platform, Jiro technology is an open, freely available set of APIs that helps provide developers with an infrastructure for building interoperable end-to-end storage management solutions for complex distributed environments.
``The growing adoption of Jiro technology is moving customers closer to realizing the full potential of storage area networks (SANs),'' said Denise Shiffman, vice president of marketing for Sun Network Storage. ``Jiro technology provides the open storage management architecture needed to move the SAN market beyond today's proprietary offerings. The technology's increasing industry momentum supports Sun's strategy of delivering open storage networks that are seamlessly scalable, easily managed and continuously available.''
``The introduction of open standards is only the first step. Implementation of those standards is a critical second step toward market adoption,'' said John Webster, senior analyst of Illuminata, Inc. ``The increasing number of key network storage industry players announcing Jiro Enabled Certification signifies that Jiro technology is taking hold in the industry as an open standard for next generation storage networks.''
StorageTek Adds Tape To Growing List of Jiro Technology Enabled Products
StorageTek's Horizon Library Observer, the industry's first Jiro technology-enabled tape product, provides monitoring capabilities for the StorageTek family of tape libraries. The StorageTek Jiro technology management facade, which is based on the SNIA Storage Media Library model, enables StorageTek libraries to interoperate with other Jiro technology-enabled devices and applications.
``StorageTek is pleased to join Sun and other industry leaders in setting the stage for truly open SANs through Jiro technology,'' said Gary Francis, StorageTek vice president and general manager, Automated Tape Solutions. ``The Jiro technology-enabled Horizon Library Observer enables customers to easily monitor StorageTek's tape library products within end-to-end SAN solutions, and we plan to extend full Jiro technology-enabled library management in the near future.''
QLogic Delivers Industry's First Jiro Technology-enabled Switches
Jiro technology enables QLogic's Fibre Channel SANbox switches to integrate quickly and easily into Jiro technology-enabled environments. It also allows Jiro technology-enabled management applications to configure and monitor the performance of QLogic SANbox switches in real time.
``QLogic is pleased to be shipping the industry's first Jiro technology-enabled switch products,'' said Mark Edwards, QLogic senior vice president. ``Our Jiro technology-enabled SANbox switches will help simplify the SAN infrastructure through the open standards, intelligent connectivity and easy manageability that Jiro technology cultivates.''
Independent Software Vendors Can Access Jiro Technology-certified Products
For Development
The Jiro Enabled Certification Program provides a forum for consistent auditing of devices and software applications for Jiro Enabled Certification. This allows developers and end users to easily determine if a product can operate in the Jiro Runtime Environment. The Jiro Enabled logo alerts developers to specific products for which they can write policy-driven management applications.
Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) who want to use the Jiro Technology Management Facades to develop automated management software can go to jiro.com for a list of vendors that have Jiro Enabled products.
