Progeny following in heavyweight champions' footsteps................. must be girl thing.Freeda Foreman, George Foreman's Daughter, Wins Pro Boxing Debut With Knockout.(Brief Article) Issue: July 3, 2000George Foreman adamantly opposed daughter Freeda's following his footsteps into the ring, saying he could not stand the thought of seeing his "baby" get hit. He needn't have worried, at least for Freeda's pro debut. Fighting a hairdresser from Milwaukee also in her first bout, Freeda Foreman barely got touched during the recent bout in Las Vegas. Swinging wildly from the start, Foreman immediately connected with a roundhouse left that sent Landers sprawling. She landed several more hard shots in the second round and Landers crumbled to the canvas and was counted out at 1:44 of the round.George Foreman, the former heavyweight champion, had sent his 23-year-old daughter a $15,000 check--matching the purse for her pro debut--and told her to cash his check and back out of the bout. Freeda, who worked for UPS in Greenville, SC, until she began to train for the ring last February, refused her father's offer and climbed through the ropes at Regent Las Vegas to fight LaQuanda Landers in a scheduled four-rounder.George Foreman refused to attend, saying he would never watch his daughter fight. Still, Freeda said after the fight: "Happy Father's Day, daddy. This is for you. I love you. "I was nervous, but I tried to tune everyone out," Foreman said. "When I knocked her down the first time, reality hit. In the second round, I was much more relaxed and wanted to keep the pressure on. I am a lot stronger than she is." Landers, who weighs 168 pounds, threw only a few glancing punches and received $1,000 for her 3-minute, 44-second appearance in the ring. Foreman weighed 180 pounds for the light heavyweight bout, which had two-minute rounds instead of three as in men's bouts. COPYRIGHT 2000 Johnson Publishing Co. COPYRIGHT 2000 Gale Group
