John 8

3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group

13 The Pharisees challenged him, "Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid."

The whole chapter is from the same conversation at the Mount of Olives where Jesus prevented the Pharisess and others from stoning a woman who was caught in adultury.

He isn't calling Abraham a spawn of Satan, he is saying that the people challenging him where not acting as children of Abraham or of God. As the verses leading up to the one you quoted show.

40 As it is, you are determined to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things.
41 You are doing the things your own father does." "We are not illegitimate children," they protested. "The only Father we have is God himself."
42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me.
43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say.

This is something pretty new to me. I don't think I have ever been involved in an arguement that involved quoteing phrases from the bible as a response. But then this is an arguement about a passage in the Bible so it makes sense. We aren't using the Bible to support an argument from authority like some people do.
