Following the Spanish-American War in 1898, Cuba was a "Protectorate" of the US. This status ceased with Fulgencio Batista being deposed in 1959.

After a brief period following the Spanish- American War, Cuba became a nation. However, its constitution gave the United States broad rights of intervention. Thus, it was quasi- independent since about 1909.......
