Can do only what is politically possible. May have to make some choices that involve compromise and his conservative support might have to go along. This is how Clinton actually dealt successfully with the left. Until left or right has more support than they now have nationally, they have to learn the art of compromise, particularly when in power. That's how bush can establish himself as a credible leader.
