Dems blame Bush for slowing economy Thursday, March 15, 2001 05:20 PM EST WASHINGTON, Mar 15, 2001 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Democrats charged Thursday that pessimistic comments from Bush administration officials have exacerbated an economic downturn. "Why are they making these comments?" Senate Minority Leader Thomas Daschle, D-S.D., asked. "They are doing it for irresponsible political gain on a tax cut we can't afford and don't need." Daschle and House Minority Leader Rep. Dick Gephardt, D-Mo., cited repeated comments from President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and others in the administration as root causes in the recent slump in consumer confidence. Bush has proposed a $1.6-trillion tax cut over the next 10 years that he says is needed to help the economy pull away from a possible recession. Democrats have argued that the proposal would actually cost far more. Bush, Cheney and Treasury Secretary Paul O' Neill have made public statements that the economy has been slowing since last fall. Gephardt said their statements were intended to muster support for an even bigger tax cut, which he is against. Gephardt said Bush should be pushing the many positive signs in the economy. "The suggestion of a recession in order to justify what looks like a $3 trillion tax cut is totally irresponsible," he said. "The president should be talking about the positive signs in the economy." Both men said these signs include increasing productivity, reduction in the federal debt and low inflation.
