Sprint PCS, in conjunction with its network infrastructure providers -- Lucent Technologies, Motorola Cellular Infrastructure Group (CIG), Nortel Networks and QUALCOMM -- will be the first to offer 3G wireless technology in the United States. Charles E. Levine, president of Sprint PCS, will unveil the company's plans at the upcoming CTIA Wireless 2001 Conference in Las Vegas on Tuesday, March 20 at the Venetian Hotel and Casino in the C2K Showroom. Demonstrations of applications running on a 3G1x technology, Sprint PCS' first phase of 3G, will also take place at the Lucent booth on the CTIA exhibit hall floor that afternoon. Levine will outline Sprint PCS' migration plans for 3G, as well as plans to introduce the technology to the Sprint PCS network later this year. Because Sprint PCS has built the nation's largest all-PCS network from the ground up based on CDMA technology, the network migration will be made with relative ease and much less expense than other wireless and technology companies. ``Sprint PCS is clearly leading the evolution to 3G with several critical advantages when it comes to its migration path and deployment of 3G,'' said Levine. ``The clarity, coverage and reliability of a single frequency network based on CDMA technology provide Sprint PCS with an unbeatable, clear and focused migration path to 3G. Ultimately, Sprint PCS will be able to provide faster, more robust wireless data services to its customers in a more timely, cost effective and efficient manner than any other wireless carrier.'' Sprint PCS' 3G1x technology will provide three major benefits to its customers: up to double the voice capacity, a tenfold increase in data speeds from 14.4 kbps to up to 144 kbps packet data, and increased handset battery performance life in standby mode by approximately 50 percent. All of these benefits will enhance the applications and services available today, and create opportunities for new and exciting applications as data speeds increase. ``While the rollout to the next generation of wireless services will be a gradual evolution, Sprint PCS has a network that was built with 3G in mind and an aggressive migration path,'' said Oliver Valente, chief technology officer for Sprint PCS. ``The introduction of 3G technology means faster data speeds and greater voice capacity. While 3G will enhance the applications we already have today, it also opens the door to a whole new set of future mobile applications and possibilities. And, based on recent announcements regarding delays and costs associated with transitions to W-CDMA, we expect to have a significant timing advantage, entering the market far earlier than most competitors.''
