Tench, time for you to Brush up on PowerNOW modes of Operation.

amd.com

Enter the new AMD PowerNow!™ technology.

Now available for the first time on Mobile AMD-K6®-2+ and Mobile AMD-K6-III+ processors, AMD PowerNow! technology allows notebook computing systems to operate in three basic modes:

High-Performance Mode
In this mode, the processor will run at its maximum clock speed and normal voltage. Generally, a notebook system will always run in this mode when connected to an external (AC) power source.
Battery Saver Mode
In this mode, the processor runs at a lower frequency and voltage in order to extend battery life. The notebook system will generally run in this mode when operating on battery (DC) power.
Automatic Mode
AMD PowerNow! technology can substantially increase battery life with no user-perceptible application performance degradation. While running in the Automatic Mode of operation, both the voltage and operating frequency of the CPU are dynamically controlled in response to the system's real time demand for CPU processing power. Whenever less processing power will do the job without user impact, AMD PowerNow! technology lowers the CPU voltage and operating frequency which results in optimized battery life.
