I agree, essentially. There is a danger of fanaticism in religion, undeniably. I do not think it is necessary to be that way, when one has the requisite humility and goodwill. But there is also political fanaticism, among other kinds, and sheer aggressiveness and acquisitiveness that needs no rationale. The argument was never over whether there are bad aspects to religious belief, but whether or not, on balance, the major religions have helped or hurt the development of society and conscience. As I said earlier, it is probably a foolish argument in this context, because it is almost impossible to resolve.......
