Paul: Your comment "One thing I am somewhat worried (perhaps _entirely_ groundlessly!) about is some degree "jerkyness" when the CPU switches frequency (this goes for both SpeedStep and PowerNow!)." is dead nuts ON !

That really bites. No way I would buy a notebook with PowerNow! (well, I might, but I would likely disable the feature, so I wouldn't consider it as much of a bonus when comparing with other offerings). I believe AMD stated that the Palomino's would have an enhanced version of PowerNow!. However, I haven't heard anything about this for a really long time (as I mentioned in an earlier post), so I wouldn't bet on it. This could be one explanation for the delay AMD is experiencing with Palomino. /shrug

One note, though... I'm slightly weary trusting a report from July last year (which is the date on the Sharky article you quote) on this subject. It could be that this issue has long since been fixed. But, I wouldn't bet on this either.

PowerNow on the K6-2 works beautifully with DVD decoding. The review of the Sony PowerNow notebook I read said that there were NO dropped frames and battery life was almost identical to low power mode, which DID have dropped frames. A perfect example for PowerNOw.
