I agree we are unlike the island.

I suppose the only parallel I draw with Japan is our aging demographics. One of the problems with the Japanese is their refusal to spend. They save very well, but they are putting the money "under the mattress" so to speak.

I believe I read once our economy is driven over 60% by the consumer. If our boomers close their wallets out of deference to their impending retirements.... well, you see the implications.

The Japanese poured their money into the Nikkei and created an asset bubble like we had with the NAZ. When you're very young I believe greed is the stronger motivating factor. When you're aging, I think it's fear.

Capital preservation rules, thus I feel we have the potential for the "L" type of "recovery". There are positives that could certainly change that outlook and turn it into a "U", but for right now, the visibility just doesn't seem to be there.
