Your (CB inclusive) tulip chain $1, $10, $100, $1000, $10,000 is perfect.

"Except for taxes"... Government takes in tax credits on cuumulative cap gains of 9,999. Assuming Tulips revert to their rightful price of $1, Gov't also has a long-term cap loss of 9,999 to credit back... we know about that.

So the Gov't comes out ahead. Society has created no extra wealth, the guy who sold it for $1 feels like an idiot and the guy who bought for $10,000 feels like an idiot and the peope in the middle play woulda-coulda-shoulda head games with each other at cocktail parties.

And fools who look on ruminate about how much money has been lost.
