Neil: I have a 32x CD player and it makes an awful noise. I much prefer my slow, reliable, and QUIET 8x CD player. I'd never buy a fast one given the choice; I see 50x and just think "Ugh, imagine the noise that makes."

Scary thing is I've started thinking the same way about CPUs. I don't want a GHz CPU if it needs a stonking great noisy fan on it. Give me my silent 350 MHz K6-II anyday - it's a dream and I love it.

IMHO, this is the next step in the evolution of the PC.

Right now PCs are extremely obtrusive: They take up inordinate amounts of space, they are downright ugly, and they make way too much noise. (And what's with this beige thing? Enough is enough already).

I can't see myself ever buying another "regular" computer case again. (I have two right now and may well upgrade those). I want black. I want sleek. I want silent.

One last comment aimed at Compaq, Dell et. al.: Slapping a huge chunk of plastic - however nicely molded - on a standard case is not the way to do it.

Actually, this is the one thing Apple is any good at. Has anyone seen the Cube-thing? It's pretty darn sweet. Not my colors, but still...

Neil, Re: Yes, that reminds me one of the things I've never understood. Do people really buy a CD rom player because it's 50x rather than another one 'coz it's 30x?

That's exactly what I am thinking. I never would buy anything at these insane speeds, unless it has an option to run at a lower speed with less noise. Another problem is that 50x CD-ROMs often have big problems with read-errors (because they need to spin up to those high speeds) and can only sustain their huge data rate for very large files. I like DVD-ROMs much better: The play movies always at 1x and are generally much quieter than CD-ROMs (and are, of course, backward compatible).
