Very disappointing, but that is human nature. Look how blase we are over aspirin, penicillin, anesthesia, xrays, etc.

I was present at a great many launches 1977 - 1980. All unmanned, of course, but many with critical scientific or defense payloads.

No one (other than special interest pubs like Av' Week) paid the slightest mind. I think the local paper sent someone over for a look but that's about it.

Without anticipation of the Shuttle, America would have scarcely known there was a space program for years.
