QCOM--AirPrime to Leverage QUALCOMM's BREW Applications Platform to Speed Wireless Solutions Development for OEM CDMA Customers
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 20, 2001--AirPrime, a leading provider of high-speed Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) wireless data and voice solutions to the original equipment manufacturing (OEM) marketplace, today announced an agreement with QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM - news) to support QUALCOMM's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless(TM) (BREW(TM)), an applications platform for wireless devices.

The BREW platform will allow developers to create applications for CDMA devices without having to access the CDMA chip system source code. AirPrime will use QUALCOMM's dynamic software platform for wireless devices to optimize customization of its own CDMA product platforms for carriers, shorten the product development cycle, and speed its customers' time to market for their wireless products and applications.

AirPrime's first product platform, the SB3000, is a third-generation (3G) ready, wireless CDMA Springboard(TM) Module for the Handspring(TM) Visor(TM) handheld computer. Based on existing and 3G CDMA technology (cdmaOne(TM), cdma2000 1x/1xEV), the SB3000, will allow Handspring users to wirelessly surf the web, exchange e-mail and make voice calls from a single device at 14.4 kbps. As 3G CDMA digital service becomes available, the SB3000 can be upgraded to support cdma2000 1x with data speeds of up to 153 kbps, power saving and voice capacity enhancements.

``The BREW initiative is a valuable development tool for a number of our platforms,'' said Mark W. Steele, AirPrime's senior vice president of Product and Program Management. ``We believe the BREW platform will help us rapidly customize our embedded CDMA products for OEM customers. Longer term, the BREW initiative is capable of accelerating the development of key strategic applications that will work across multiple OEM platforms.''

``AirPrime is uniquely positioned to help QUALCOMM quickly expand adoption of the BREW platform in the wireless Internet market segment,'' said Peggy Johnson, senior vice president of QUALCOMM and general manager of QUALCOMM Internet Services. ``We look forward to working with AirPrime to enable valuable applications for their OEM customers.''
