I agree to a certain extent. Part of the problem is that it's fairly well accepted that governments can't accurately report the inflation rate. Even so, a family's or individual's cost of living doesn't necessarily change at the same rate as a so-called national average.

On the other hand, the further out someone is attempting to make plans, the more inflation affects the purchasing power of the currency. To some extent, inflation needs to be considered for the plans extending decades into the future.
