I see a countra-indicator recently, might mark near end of this madness

covers of journals are asking whether the internet is dead
whether it was just a hoax
whether it will fail to deliver anything at all
whether it will continue to exist in some useful form

I see this as positive
sure, 75% of internet dot.con companies screwed investors
both equity shares and private funders
now we will see the survivors
they will include BEA, Inktomi, Ariba, CommerceOne, Yahoo in some form
and probably many more viable companies

anyone who thinks the internet is dead, a hoax, a worthless scam...
is utterly crazy and absurdly deficient mentally

I like the New Energy Companies
Calpine has a solid business model with efficient modern gas turbines
I believe they have locked up all orders from GE until 2004
any more share appreciation might be speculative and unsustainable though

I also like the Fuel Cell guys
like PlugPower, FuelCell, Ballard, etc
California is demonstrating that electric cars work, and with decent power and range
if this energy crisis doesnt convince Congress to encourage alternatives, what will?
we had a brief dating experience with electric windmills, solar cell panels, back in late 1970's
it was encouraged by the Congress with tax credits, far more incentive than deductions
but it fizzled, since technology wasnt ready, and oil prices went to under $10/barrel

I like wireless, but really really unsure when it will take hold
so many promising niches to fill, e.g.
file synchronization, stock trading, transaction encryption, streaming, conference calls
but the spectrum licensing costs have been so huge, bigger than huge, bigger than enormous
it will take years to digest those costs
and 2.5G will undercut for a while
until carriers intentionally undercut their own 2.5G with 3G deals, I say "forgeddaboudit"

enough musing, back to sucking my thumb
