mindmeld: Great post...I think a lot of folks feel that Greenspan may be out of touch...It might be neat if we could abolish the FED or put it on autopilot...=)

Or we could try as Milton Friedman has suggested and let the market set rates. We do that with currency values and the balance of payments and things work just fine. (I have not missed the fact that governments do try and manipulate currency values - but over time (usually a very small amount of time) the market prevails. That is why a chronic payments imbalance on our part has not mattered - it has been corrected in our currency values.
