When was the great Simian AIDS epidemic? Apparently a few thousand years ago. There is no documented history of long existence of SIVs. There are mathematical phylogenies, sequence alignments, and other projective indices of long existence. However, there were years and years of efforts to find primate agents, i.e., retroviruses, all over Africa between 1940 through 1980 and no SIV was ever reported in the literature. There were techniques available since the late 1950s to find haemagluttinating viruses and syncytium-forming viruses. Where is the hard data for historical existence? I do not believe you will find any. AIDS is not in itself a disease, it is the symptoms and opportunistic infections that occur after the immune system has collapsed AIDS is a disease of the human immune system that is characterized cytologically especially by reduction in the numbers of CD4-bearing helper T cells to 20 percent or less of normal rendering the subject highly vulnerable to life-threatening conditions.
