Calpine

I like Calpine (CPN) as a developer of gas-fired power plants. Total market cap is just under $15 billion. In recent weeks, CPN signed $8 billion in long-term power supply contracts with the State of California. Last month, CPN agreed to acquire Encal Energy, Ltd., a large Canadian producer of natural gas. CPN should earn $1.60 in 2001, and now trades just above 50. It is an ideal "buy/write" program candidate -- buy the stock, write the calls.

From a recent company press release:

Based in San Jose, Calif., Calpine Corporation is dedicated to providing customers with reliable and competitively priced electricity. Calpine is focused on clean, efficient combined-cycle, natural gas-fired generation and is the nation's largest producer of renewable geothermal energy. The company was founded in 1984 and is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol CPN. For more information about Calpine, visit the company's Website at www.calpine.com.
