Lewis' doubts over Tyson fight

Tuesday, 20 March, 2001, 02:53 GMT

Lennox Lewis has appeared on BBC television and stated that he has "a nagging fear" that a showdown with Mike Tyson will never take place.

Both fighters have stated their wish to get in the ring, but wrangles over television rights have prevented any deals being done.

Speaking on the BBC's On Side programme, Lewis said: "I always think positive but you could say I have a little nagging fear that it won't happen.

"He could lose his next fight, I could lose my next fight, he could get in trouble - but hopefully these things won't happen and we do get the fight together."

Lewis has beaten all credible challengers with the exception of Tyson, but getting the two together is proving difficult.

"This is the fight that the whole world is waiting for," Lewis added.

"Mike has said that he definitely wants to fight me. We both want the fight, especially this year, and really we just want our TV companies to get together and make the fight.

"I think it would be an exciting fight - he's still got his appeal - the whole world wants to see the fight and I don't see why it can't be made."

LPS5 note: Hmmm. But for a "that," and a period, the first question could be rephrased:

"I always think positive but you could say I have a little nagging fear. It won't happen."

And this is funny talk for the heavyweight champ:

"...I could lose my next fight..."

Maybe he's being frank and realistic, but it sounds a little defeatist...maybe Lewis is getting jittery, after all his talk, about the prospect of actually facing Iron Mike in the ring.

Or...maybe he'll KO Tyson in the second round of their bout.

I can't wait, no matter what happens
