Long term, this is a once in a lifetime buying opportunity for many stocks.

Well, not much I can say to that. You have your opinion. I can not understand why you folks insist on trying to catch the bottom. Even if the bottom is in, and I think that is the most remote possibility, then the odds would favour a nice pullback down the road that would allow one to get on. In the meantime, every time the bulls buy the dip they get burned. Makes no sense to be so eager.

You shouldn't make comments like that without refering to history. History is very clear - major sell offs like this do not result in V bottoms. There will be plenty of "buys in a lifetime" ahead, even if issues generally hold these levels.

I was expecting a bounce but my long term (or is it near term, I can never remember these days!) expectation is still SPX < 1000.

Even if this view is wrong, there will be more opportunities to get in. Safer opportunities. And quite possibly, much cheaper opportunities too.

<It was dumb to play the notion of a short term rally in this environment. It had to be 75 bp for it to work. >

<Long term, this is a once in a lifetime buying opportunity for many stocks.>

LOL, aren't these 2 mutually exclusive?? The fact that we sold off after the cut tells you we're going lower no?

Really? On what basis? PE? Price to sales? Or is it just what you hear on CNBC? Intc is trading at a historic high Price to sales. SBUX has an 80PE. What values are you refering too?

Well I for one will take a cats approach to this.

Once in a lifetime? Where have I heard that before.

Bottoms are not made after fresh new lows. Bottoms are long drawn out affairs where stocks break to the upside and fail, and then break to the upside and then fail. This can go on for months. When you break to a new low, you have to start all over again. What makes them stick is that no one believes that stocks will ever rise again and even people who want to hold decide only to hold long enough to get out at a slightly higher price. People sell all the way up out of the bottom, this is what gives the upside persistence.
