You might try getting some for diatomaceous earth from your local garden supply store. From what I've read, ants die of dehydration on contact with the stuff, yet it's harmless to humans and pets.

Arsenic and formic acid both can cause numbness and tingling of the extremities. . Use ant baits - the ants will carry them back to the nest.
