Since it became clear that PIII couldn't compete with Athlon on .18, it became obvious that Intel was either going to move quickly to P4 or cease to be a factor in the PC business. The infrastructure for P4 isn't really ready yet (the motherboards are too expensive since they're all still 6 layer), they can't dump RDRAM until this summer at the earliest (the replacement chipsets are just now sampling), and the die size is too big on .18 for it to be suitable as a mainstream chip.

But Intel has zero options near term, so it has to attempt to push the obviously unsuitable P4 into the mainstream. Given what Intel's stock has been doing lately, wallstreet thinks they're screwed.
