The area being drilled is a small part of the park, and new drilling methods should easily keep damage low. We know there was a great possibility of oil in the park before we set aside the park. You don't know. Canada also has up to 1 trillion barrels of oil in alberta in the tar sands. At current usage rates, this is enough oil to run both the US and Canada for 300 yrs. Certainly Canada because of its later development has a better enviromental record and Canada has been able to learn from our mistakes. But I wouldn't assume that Canada would forego oil in ANWR if they knew it was there, and there was a need for it. Right now Canada doesn't have a pressing need. The US has. As for the forests... check your facts Harry - Canada is self-sufficient in lumber, the USA is not and has not been for a long time.. which is why you import so much wood.. why is that the case? Over-cutting... a waste and misuse of a resource..<<<< Over cutting has happened in the past. But as lumber becomes more valuable, most US lumber companies are regrowing cleared forests, with a recycle time of 80 to 100 yrs depending upon the type of tree. I have no doubt most of Canada's lumber co. are American owned; and follow many of the same procedures there as here. A far greater reason for the disparity is that Canada has 1/10 the population of the US but has a far greater forest area. I realize Canada has replanting requirements in their leases, but the leases also are cheaper than the US. so things are about even; as it is up to the lessee to replant. Talk about waste, we are finding out it is better to clear the land of old growth trees in order to prevent the build up of fuel for forest fires. You may be smug now. However, that may change as all of CA empties up because of no electricity and heads north to Canada. We intend to fight your sending down cold air by sending CA up there. Take that Canada.
