Excellent Question:
"What is the mechanism that makes the intangible so very real to some people (and conversely why NOT, to others)? More real than the truth of the senses, which is, of course, problematic- but better than nothing."

I suspect we can find the whole continuum of explanations from people who recently had tea with God to people who just have a philosophical inkling about it.

I come in at the middle of this. I believe in God and have no doubts about an eternity and my continued existence in it. I also feel bound to study and and learn as much as I can through my physical senses; understanding that there are limitations there in. The study of the physical universe and the creatures of the universe is enriching and provides evidence that compliments my faith; it is not an alternative to having faith, as you posed it IMO.
