Fear simply has the ability to strip away all the civilizing gloss and have you crying out for mommy, or God or death. It is actually all about illusions. In the end, when you are face to face with death, there is only uncertainty- because no one knows for sure what happens after death. It is actually probably very easy and tempting to entertain illusions at that point- but I prefer people who face the great questions with an open mind. My father always did. When he died, it was as an agnostic. And it wasn't an easy death. But he didn't compromise in life, and he didn't compromise in death. I suppose it doesn't really matter, in the objective sense, at least not to a relativist like me, but in the subjective sense I admired him a lot for it.
