I believe that's a small 'd' followed by the variable (--> differentials). A small delta means the variation of a variable.

That may well be, but it certainly won't prohibit me from using "delta" as a synonym for "difference" in the future ;)

Do you have an example from physics of delta meaning the difference between two different things? I don't think so.
