Re South African gold stocks : check out this week's Economist for the article on property rights in the Republic. They are beginning to redistribute lands and mineral rights.

So far the mining companies are said to be likely to hang onto their properties ... but you know politics. Would you rather take a mineral right in some forlorn part of the continent or would you rather have someone hand you over an existing mine? Is it any wonder that many najor South African companies have "relocated" to London and elsewhere, and have been investing in Canada, Australia etc..

Zambia, to the north, secured property rights for a number of years, but that has all fallen into a land stampede supported by the government. South Africa seems a lot more stable than Zambia in almost every dimension, but the population pressures are driving the politicians hard.
