I realize that 4 1/2 percent in T-bills or treasury-only money markets isn't all that attractive

Don't forget I-bonds, 6.49% currently. Good if you plan to hold for at least 6 months, especially in tax-deferred accounts. Fixed 3.4% rate + twice-yearly CPI adjustment. State and local tax-free. And, if we go from stagnation to 70-s style stag-flation, they will be a great vehicle to preserve wealth.
