It has been pointed out that when Palm claims "many weeks" they're talking about intermittent usage. When PocketPC claims "12 hours" they're talking continuous usage. Neither measure is wrong, they're just different from each other. The only apples-to-apples comparison I've seen showed the iPAQ in the same ballpark as the IIIc WRT battery life when they were measured in the same fashion.

And the iPAQ screen puts the IIIc screen to shame...

I think this e-book thing is really overhyped. There is little market for it. People who enjoy books don't want to read them on their computer or PDA. People want to feel them, write on them, trade them, and dog ear the pages. The way people read books is ingrained in the culture. All IMHO.

Mang/WLD:

Beats me. The Palm website lists all the Palms as being backlit (as do the individual model specs) with the m505 being the only one with a backlit Graffiti area:

palm.com

The IIIc has adjustable brightness, as does the iPAQ (a "frontlit" screen with 4 manual brightness settings plus "auto"), so I presume the m505 does as well. The Handspring Visor also has a backlit screen, I don't know if the brightness is adjustable or not.

So its not absence of backlighting on the screen that's the problem with the m505 (if there really is one). Have to wait and see with my own eyes, as well as what others say from hands on viewing. You'd think having had the IIIc screen panned so much, Palm would have fixed this the second time around, particularly for their new flagship unit.
