Scott- I agree with the hardware sites. Work with what we've got. As a business AMD's job is to keep cranking out the merchandise to a market willing to buy. I think each new launch attracts more interest and converts more Intel users to AMD users. That's a long lasting effect as once switched people aren't going to switch back any time soon.

Scott: I find it odd reading all these hardware sites that they seem to ignore or casually mention Palomino will be next quarter... there is none of the angst over there that there seems to be here today about this move-back.

I think the reason is rather simple: AMD doesn't need Palomino in desktops right now and desktops are all most of these sites are concerned with. In the mobile arena, however, AMD desperately needs Palomino. Looking forward (as investors are want to do - certainly more so than hardware sites), AMD will also need Palomino in desktops, but not quite yet.

The focus more seems to be that the 1.33 can be overclocked fairly easily to 1.5..how good of a performer it is.. and that it bodes well for Palomino once it is released... and how the Thunderbird core is ultra-competitive with current P4 offerings."

I think the one who really should have "Angst" (I didn't know that this German word for "fear" is used in English, too) is Intel. In late December, early January when the Athlon 1200 was hardly available it seemed as if Intel would win the megahertz war with a very big margin. It must be a shock for Intel to realize that the good old Thunderbird can scale to 1400-1500 with ease.

The "Angst" is about the Palomino. The Thunderbird just now proves to be an even better core than previously thought: Impressive scalability without performance reducing design compromises. Now, AMD has been working for 1 1/2 years to further improve this core. I can imagine that quite a lot of people at Intel feel uneasy about what the Palomino designers will bring to the table.

If the Palomino delay turns out to be the result of a successful in-depth core reworking I shall not complain.
