AMD's Moves Today Smart Jim Seymour 3/22/01 11:54 AM ET Couple of letters from readers already this morning, asking whether AMD's announcement today of the availability of its new 1.33GHz Athlon chip, and the delay of its "Palomino" successors to the Athlon, and "Morgan" successors to the Duron line, change my assessment of AMD, per my column this morning.(Whew! Mega-sentence there! Sorry....) Not a bit. I knew about the new, even-faster Athlon, and the delays in the Palomino and Morgan. Please note that the delays of the latter two are a good sign for investors: AMD found a way to wring still more speed out of existing Athlon and Duron designs, making it an easy and cost-saving decision to hold onto the Palominos and Morgans a little longer. (And to make 'em even faster still when they DO appear in Q3 or Q4. (AMDS says Q3; I'm skeptical.) This is an amazingly rational move, given (a) overall reduced demand for PCs and (b) the relatively low performance of the comparable Intel CPUs. Rolling out the new designs will be expensive. AMD can push more bucks to the bottom line this year by extending the life of its current fastest CPUs another couple of quarters.... Call it yet another unwitting gift from Craig Barrett & Co
