Gigabyt GA-7DX revision 3 and 4 are the ones supporting 266 MHz FSB while revision 2.3 (or 2.4) is the DXC, which supports only 200 MHz.

Yes, this could be one (relatively plausible) explanation. I saw on Techannel that the 1.53 GHz Palomino used a Gigabyte GA7DX board in revision 3.0. Probably it won't work with an earlier revision. Or maybe this is just a coincidence. I'll ask AMD tomorrow at CeBIT about the infrastructure but probably they won't say anything substantial.

It would be a monumental flop if the Palomino do not works on actual infrastructure.
