Lagos, Mar 22, 2001 (This Day/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX)-- Compaq Computer has introduced its first desktop computer using Double Data Rate (DDR) memory, becoming the largest PC maker thus far to adopt the new, faster technology. Compaq Computer is making the DDR memory, or DDR DRAM, available as part of its new consumer model, the Presario 700z, which uses Advanced Micro Devices' Athlon chips ranging from lGHz to 1.2GHz.
According to the Regional Marketing Manager, Compaq West Africa, Miss Chioma Iwuchukwu the DDR memory promises to deliver higher performance to desktops and notebooks.
She noted that although processors and other PC component have seen dramatic leaps in performance year after year, memory has plodded along at a slower rate, an imbalance that has created data bottlenecks within computers.
DDR memory, she said has the ability to process twice the amount of data in the same amount of time as standard computer memory, called SDR DRAM.
" Many in the industry have come to believe that DDR DRAM will become fairly prevalent over the next few years, partly because of failure of memory based on designs from Rambus, called RDRAM, to grow in popularity, she maintained."
Speaking on Compaq AlphaServer Systems, she pointed out that these are the unstoppable, enterprise-level servers that provide unmatched scalability and availability for developing and managing robust non-stop solutions and services.
These systems, she noted, are extremely scalable, offering the headroom required by critical business environments like telecoms, banking and finance, e-commerce, e-business, m-commerce, and business intelligence, amongst others.
"With the proliferation of wireless phones, it's no surprise that the telecommunications industry is undergoing exponential growth, which means increased demand on call processing, billing, and customer care services. Helping telecommunications industry
stay ahead of this frenetic pace is Compaq AlphaServer Systems," she maintained.
However, Compaq Computer Corporation has developed a solution spectrum of Information Technology (IT) framework that builds on prior investments, shortens time-to-market and reduces the cost, time and risk of continued innovation.
Compaq Computer Corporation, a leading global provider of technology and solutions established a regional representative office in Nigerian in 1999, which provides sales, marketing, and technical support to its customers through a network of twenty-five Compaq authorised dealers and systems resellers, utilising, over 100 marketing outlets in the country.
The company with its commitment to transferring technology skills into the region has trained over 270 engineer since its entry into the country.
Compaq is the largest supplier of computing systems in the world. It designs, develops, manufactures, and markets hardware, software, solutions, and services, including industry-leading enterprise computing solutions, fault-tolerant business-critical solutions, and communications products, commercial desktop and portable products, and consumer PCs.
