Dear Combjelly:

Simple! P4 was not as advertised. Not a Hot Blast Seller as Intel said but, a Cold Frozen Shelf Stuffer. They do not like servers running on it, and RDRAM is a big minus both in memory size and cost. The Socket switch isn't appreciated either.

Now, Athlons are a Hot Blast Seller. It has proved itself in the web serving business where single CPUs are not a detriment especially fast and cheap ones like Tbirds. 384K L2s are ok for the applications found on front ends especially with 18 way caches. But, they are now eyeing the database server backends (and many similar apps) for Palomino and now need the bigger caches. (The fact that Intel seems to make sweetheart deals for its CPUs when directly challenged in a market doesn't hurt either)

Plans change.
