Ever hear of Kelvin McKenzie? He was a very successful editor of British tabloid The Sun.

If people rang him up to complain, he'd say something like this: "Look, we don't want people like you to read our newspaper," and hang the phone up on them.

I'm not entirely of that view, but reading some of the missives addressed to me in very green ink, cos of the Internet age, I feel very tempted.

The point being that at The Reg we feel that rather than editorial being influenced by ads, we have to write good stories read by many people, and so the vendors will have to advertise.

That, by the way, is how it used to work in computer publishing and in other newspaper sectors before the bad days started.

Intel has advertised in The Reg before. So, for that matter, has Microsoft, IBM, Compaq and Dell. We have to pay wages, pay the rent and cyber rent, and hire staff. What are we supposed to do? Hope that you lot will pay us to keep going?

Nah.
