Tax question....

Hi Gene,

Do you have a bookmarked URL for tax questions relating to capital gains and losses? I am aware of the wash sale rule, and waiting 31 days to buy back a specific security....but I have no idea of how these rules change with short selling.

For example, if you were to sell a stock that you currently held as a long position for a deductible loss, could you immediately short the same stock....or do you need to wait 31 days until you could short this stock? (My guess would be that both are "selling the stock" so in this case it would be O.K., but you couldn't cover the short position until after 31 days or you would loose the earlier deduction?)

Or...if you had a short sale of a stock, and covered that position for a loss....would you then need to wait 31 days in order to buy a long position in the same stock? (my guess would be yes...you'd need to wait to buy as a long position.)

The fact that I'm even asking these questions is truly scary....and must mean that we are near a bottom in this Nasdaq sell off.

Thanks for your ideas....or a URL you might suggest where I could research these questions.
