WLD, I don't know if you are doing this on purpose or just being repetitous. You grabbed on to one single comment by one who-knows-what on the color of a pre-release model and expanded on that to repeatedly trash the whole device. Subsequent posts had already clarified that the screen is classified as Frontlighting so how bright it looks depends on the frontlight that's built-in or its surrounding light.

This new screen is a brand new design from Palm and we should give it the benefits of the doubt until we have more review done on it. I can see the good thing about this design is that it can borrows lights from the surrounding which is usually quite bright thus conserving energy. You only need to turn on the frontlight under very dark condition which is very rare indeed. In fact the FAQ said this screen looks better in bright sunlight which is a GREAT breakthrough if you have used some sort of big-screen LCD videocamera. Under the sun, you can't see nothing on these LCD screens. I think this screen will be a smashing success and I hope Palm has three hundred patents on the screen so that Bill G won't be able to shamelessly copy it.

From Palm FAQ posted by Don which clears up ALL my questions:

"The display on the m505 utilizes a new technology in color screen display. Previous displays, like the Palm
IIIc, use a transflective display technology (much like that on previous Palm models). The Palm m505
uses a reflective screen, which greatly enhances its ability to be viewed in direct sunlight conditions. In fact,
the greater the ambient lighting, the better the viewing experience. "
