Wireless Week

Siemens showed off its small, sleek S47 phones intended for the U.S. market at its CTIA Wireless 2001 booth Wednesday, but show goers were more interested in bigger handsets. Crowds queued for enormous pool rafts in the shape of Siemens mobile phones and then struggled -- overloaded with bags of other tchotchkes -- to deflate them to fit in suitcases.

While the buzz wasn't about the S47 TDMA/GSM handsets, it likely will be soon. The phones operate on two TDMA bands and one GSM, and are enabled for General Packet Radio Services with wireless data speeds up to 115 kilobits per second -- one step closer to the anticipated 3G mark. In addition, the handset has smartphone features including voice dialing and WAP browsing.

Separately, Siemens conducted a live video conference call between two computers connected wirelessly over a Time Division Duplex base station and terminal. The technology provides data transfers of up to 2 megabits per second over third-generation UMTS networks. <<
