You know the British are never going to give back the Elgin Marbles and the Lion Gate. It's one of those things I feel ambivalent about. Obviously if the Taleban is going to destroy everything it's better outside their reach. But when a more sane government takes over, whenever that may be, you know that the things are never going to be shipped back to Afghanistan. I think I remember reading about a really fine collection of antiquities at the University in Kabul. Hope those things get saved, or looted, as the case may be. Have you seen "Balkan Cabaret" yet? It's excellent, funny, mordant, black humor. There is a scene between two best friends that really gives a lot of insight into the intransigence and belligerence of Serbians, and Afghanistanis are far more instransigent and belligerent than Serbs, at least the ones I know are.
