I think it's a combination of things. In the big picture it's just supply vs. demand. In the short term it's all games. One thing for sure is they don't do the same thing every time. I've read about the early SOES traders and how they caught the MM's off gaurd. They were predictable so the SOES traders would just piggy back institutional moves. The MM's wised up quick and now the only way not to be predictable is to change up your style. If there was a way to really know what moved price all the time, we'd all be rich.
