I agree - employee stock option plans and employee stock purchase plans are necessary in order to attract and retain employees viv-a-vis the competition. Terminating such plans would be extremely short-sighted, IMO. You might as well just vote against competitive employee compensation. Try that and see how well the company maintains any kind of industry leadership. If the day comes when the stock market is so bad that employees don't want options and ESPPs any more, then and only then will they become unnecessary.

I should also point out that the equipment companies are well versed in buying low when they execute their buyback authority.
