Ted, of all cultures, the Japanese fascinates me the most. It is an interesting blend of humble(ness?), work ethic, loyalty, respect, subservience, and they can really kick some ass.

I agree..the Japanese culture is the most interesing to me as well. There is a great deal of beauty and then there are the contradictions. I don't think that I will ever quite understand how they see the world.

I hope you did not think I was slamming the culture yesterday.

I studied Japanese martial arts thru my youth. Growing up in Kansas, all my friends were white. When I was about 12, I first realized I wasn't white, and I just figured I must be Japanese. What a bummer to find out I was Thai (50% Thai, 50% German, 100% alchoholic).

That is scary! Although I think Thai and German go well...my German friends really like going to Thailand for their holidays. The only thing that would worry me is if you tell you have the alcohol part under control. ;~))

Have you ever gone to a noodles restaurant? Soba and Udon? If its full of Japanese people, you can barely here the person sitting next to you over the slurping. What's annoying is that in LA, the white folk try to be Asian so they slurp even louder than the Asians. And don't get me started on you white folk eating sushi! ;~>

You will never have to worry about me slurping. I am sorry, its one of the few personal habits of people that can get me going. I had a friend when I was growing up who always slurp....eventually I would smack him to get him to stop. It would work for a while and then he would be back at it. Said the food tasted better that way. Go figure!!

Something interesting I noticed on my last trip to Asia. I was in Bangkok where I saw a bunch of punk ass kids walking around in shades and leather jackets. They looked like they were in the Triad (there are some NASTY Asian gangs in So Cal, no lie). Well, they were walking into a mall, and when they saw an older woman walking a few meters behind, they all stopped and held the door open. She nodded, thankfully to them, and two of them bowed. Then she passed, and they continued to look and act like a bad ass punch of punks.

Let me tell you something...I noticed that when I moved from LA to Seattle [I noticed the reverse when I moved to LA from Mpls.] The kids in LA are out of control and that includes some of them in Orange County too. When I first got here, the kids here would come up to me and I was expecting major 'tude and instead just the opposite. And some of the LA gang members were scary..particularly if you were white.

There is something in the LA air..maybe its the smog....that makes kids there bad ass. I am glad that I did my time and am out. <g>

Another thing I noticed recently is how TALL Asian kids are getting. I'm 5'8", and I felt short around those kids. Must be all the Wendy's! ;~>

The Japanese are pretty tall. But do you know who are the jolly green giants of the world...the Germans. When I am over there, I feel like I am one of the little people. And no joke, when I went into a Munich dept store to buy a shirt, they almost bumped me to the boys dept...and I am nearly 5'10" and normal weight. Talk about being humiliated!

It's definitely the diet. McDonalds.

I thought you were Japanese descent. Now you're Thai and German. No room to talk about who eats sushi. <G>
I love Thai food too. Pad Thai and Chicken in red curry.
